He Zhang
Postdoctoral Researcher E-mail: hzhang41@hku.hk Curriculum Vitae Research Interests: He Zhang received a B.S. degree from Northwest A&F University in 2014 and a Ph.D. degree from Catholic University of Louvain. He joined the GEARS Lab since August 2022. He has amassed skills and interests in soil analysis, plant ecology and carbon cycle with several years of experience studying soil and water conservation. During the doctoral training, he focuses on using remote sensing (UAV-based photogrammetry and spectroscopy) combined with machine learning approaches to retrieve earth surface attributes in various ecosystems, such as soil organic carbon in croplands, canopy height and biomass in tropical forests. |
Calvin Ka Fai Lee (Google Scholar)
Postdoctoral Researcher E-mail: leeckf@hku.hk Website: calvinleeresearch.wordpress.com/ Research Interests: Calvin received a BSc in Zoology and MRes in Biodiversity, Evolution, and Convervation from University College London, and a PhD from Deakin University, Melbourne in 2021, before joining the GEARS lab. His research focuses on detecting temporal trends in tree and forest health using multisource remote sensing data combined with machine learning and deep learning methods. This research will allow us to monitor ecosystems and their responses to threats, such as human disturbances and climate change. Additionally, he is also working on methods to estimate and monitor mangrove ecosystem degradation using remote sensing. His previous research includes improving the ways ecosystem risk assessments are conducted, particularly when using satellite data. This included developing the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems as part of the core team. |
Kun Zhang
Postdoctoral Researcher E-mail: kunzh@hku.hk Website: kunlz.github.io/ Research Interests: Kun received a B.S. in Geographic Information Science from Northwest A&F University in 2012 and a Ph.D. in Physical Geography (Eco-Hydrology) from Lanzhou University in 2018. Then, he worked as a special research assistant (Postdoc.) at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Kun joined the GEARS Lab since Nov, 2021. His research interests mainly focus on the terrestrial water cycle and remote sensing, especially in the global evapotranspiration modeling and soil water balance. Furthermore, his research primarily involves the use of Bayesian approaches and other statistical methods to identify the sensitivity and optimal estimates of parameters. |
Kaihao Chen
Postdoctoral Researcher E-mail: kaihaoch@hku.hk Curriculum Vitae Research Interests: Kaihao received a B.Eng. degree in Groundwater Science and Engineering from Jilin University in 2016, the M.Phil. degree in Civil Engineering from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in 2018 and the Ph.D. degree in Hydrogeology from the University of Hong Kong (HKU) in 2021. He joined the GEARS Lab in October 2021. His past research mainly focused on the environmental hydraulics, coastal hydrogeology, and associated ecological contamination monitoring by coupling multi-scale remote sensing and field investigation. In the future research, he is interested in leveraging cutting-edge remote sensing to explore the terrestrial ecosystem sensitivity response to plant available water on a pan-tropical scale. He also shares the interests in investigating the relationship between the water and gene-edited plants by hyperspectral and thermal information. |
Md Mizanur Rahman
Postdoctoral Researcher E-mail:mizansrf@hku.hk Curriculum Vitae Research Interests: Mizan received a B.S. with honors in Forestry from Khulna University in 2009 and a Ph.D. in Agricultural Science from Kyoto University in 2018. His research interests mainly focus on the mechanism of biodiversity and ecosystem services (functions) in forest ecosystem, machine learning model for mapping essential biodiversity variables (including plant functional traits and forest carbon) in mangroves by fusing optical, radar and LiDAR imagery, as well as impact of climate change on ecosystem multifunctionality. |
Zhengfei Guo
PhD Student E-mail: u3006948@connect.hku.hk Curriculum Vitae Research Interests: Zhengfei received a B.S. in remote sensing with honors at the Southwest Jiaotong University in 2016 and a Master in GIS at Beijing Normal University in June 2019. He joined the GEARS lab to start his Ph.D. journey since September 1st, 2019. Zhengfei’s research interest includes ecology, remote sensing, and geospatial statistics and analysis. Specifically, he is interested in integrating all cutting-edge geospatial techniques with ecological theories to first understand the patterns of vegetation dynamics from seasonal timescales up to decadal timescales, and then explore the potential mechanisms underlying such vegetation-climate interactions. He also shares some interest in urban ecology. |
Yingyi Zhao
PhD Student E-mail: yyz2019@hku.hk Curriculum Vitae Research Interests: Yingyi received a B.S. with honors in remote sensing at Wuhan University in 2016, and a M.S. in photogrammetry and remote sensing at Wuhan University in June 2019. She joined the GEARS lab since September 1st, 2019. She was also awarded with a prestigious University Postgraduate Fellowship. Her past research mainly focused on using LiDAR data to help characterize urban environment and forestry. In particular, her research has involved with the algorithm development to help process LiDAR data, and the statistical analysis to help evaluate ecological effects of urban plants. For her future research, she is keen to connect various state-of-the-art technologies with fundamental theories and process models to help understand our living environment, as well as how the environmental change could exert the impact on plant communities. |
Guangqin Song
PhD Student E-mail: songgqin@connect.hku.hk Curriculum Vitae Research Interests: Guangqin received a B.S in Geographical Information Science at Sun Yat-sen University in 2019. He started his PhD at HKU on February 1st, 2020. Throughout his past studies, Guangqin has accumulated very solid background in quantitative methods and computer skills (C++, MATLAB, ArcGIS, ENVI, SPSS, Python, etc). He is interested in exploring the patterns and causes of plant phenology, as well as the underlying scaling principles from leaves to ecosystem scales. He is currently developing some computer-vision based approach to enable accurate monitoring of plant phenology at tree crown scales, which lays down the foundation for subsequent exploration of higher-level ecological processes. |
Ziyu Lin
PhD Student E-mail: linziyu@connect.hku.hk Curriculum Vitae Research Interests: Ziyu received a B.S in Geographical Information Science at South China Agricultural University in 2018, and a M.S. in Surveying and Mapping Engineering at Sun Yat-Sen University. She joined the GEARS lab since September 1st, 2020. Throughout her past studies, Ziyu has accumulated very solid background in global surface change monitoring based on google earth engine. She is interested in exploring the global-scale forest biomass dynamic based on cutting edge remote sensing techniques. |
Yating Gu
PhD Student E-mail: yatinggu@connect.hku.hk Curriculum Vitae Research Interests: Yating obtained a BSc in remote sensing science and technology with first-class honours from Wuhan University (WHU) in 2020. She joined the GEARS lab since September 1st, 2020. Yating was also awarded with a prestigious University Postgraduate Fellowship (UPF). She used to connect cutting-edge satellite remote sensing and sensor technology with AI and mathematical models to enable smarter ways to differentiate land cover types. Now she is interested in leveraging cutting-edge remote sensing and geospatial techniques to improve our monitoring and understanding of natural environments, especially in the context of global change. |
Shuwen Liu
PhD Student E-mail: liushw23@mail2.sysu.edu.cn Curriculum Vitae Research Interests: Shuwen received a M.Sc. in Surveying and Mapping Engineering at Sun Yat-Sen University in 2020, and a B.Sc. in Geographic Information Science at China Agricultural University in 2018. Afterwards, Shuwen joined the GEARS lab to start his PhD. Shuwen is interested in proposing a solution through a bottom-up physically based approach that integrates state-of-the-art canopy radiative transfer models and LiDAR-derived three-dimensional canopy structure with field observations of biotic dynamics across various scales to fully understand the variability in canopy reflectance spectra. |
Qianhan Wu
PhD Student E-mail: qhwu@connect.hku.hk Curriculum Vitae Research Interests: Qianhan received a B.S. in Geographical Information Science at Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology(NUIST) in 2018, and a M.S. in Applied Geosciences at the University of Hong Kong. She joined the GEARS lab since September 1st, 2021. Throughout her past studies, Qianhan has accumulated very solid background in monitoring the patterns of global-scale land cover changes and analyzing drivers behind them. She is currently interested in exploring the forest recovery and biomass dynamic after disturbances in the context of global change, as well as forest carbon stocks change in achieving carbon neutrality based on various state-of-the-art remote sensing and geospatial techniques. |
Xiaorong Wang
